Gratitude: Remembering Both the Wounds and the Blessings

Gratitude: Remembering Both the Wounds and the Blessings

"People May Hurt Us, But God Also Sends People to Help Us"

Life teaches us an important truth: people can be the source of both pain and blessing. We have all experienced moments when someone disappointed us, betrayed our trust, rejected us, or caused us emotional pain. But if we are honest, we must also recognize that there have been people who encouraged us, supported us, prayed for us, helped us, and stood with us during difficult seasons.

A grateful heart does not ignore the wounds, but it chooses not to live trapped by them. Instead, it remembers the goodness God has shown through others.

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

"Two are better than one... If either of them falls down, one can help the other up."

God often works through people. He sends friends, family, mentors, leaders, and even strangers to become instruments of His love and grace.

1. Acknowledge the Pain, But Do Not Become Bitter

Being hurt by people is part of living in a broken world. Even Jesus experienced betrayal. Judas, one of His own disciples, betrayed Him. Peter denied Him. Religious leaders rejected Him. Yet Jesus continued to love, forgive, and fulfill His purpose.

Luke 23:34

"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

Pain can either build walls around our hearts or teach us to depend more deeply on God.

Forgiveness does not mean what happened was acceptable. It means we refuse to allow someone else's actions to control our future.

2. Remember Those Who Stood With You

While some people have caused wounds, others have been God's answer in difficult times.

There are people who:

  • prayed when we were weak,
  • encouraged us when we wanted to give up,
  • helped us when we had nothing,
  • believed in us when others doubted us,
  • showed kindness when we needed it most.

These people are reminders that God has not abandoned us.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up."

Never allow the actions of a few people to make you forget the love shown by many.

3. Gratitude Helps Heal the Heart

When we focus only on those who hurt us, we can become prisoners of the past. But when we remember those who blessed us, our hearts begin to heal.

Gratitude changes our perspective:

  • Instead of saying, "Nobody cares about me," we remember those who showed care.
  • Instead of saying, "Everyone left me," we remember those who stayed.
  • Instead of saying, "People only hurt me," we remember those who helped restore us.

Psalm 103:2

"Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits."

4. Become the Person Who Blesses Others

Because we know what it feels like to be hurt, we should become people who bring healing. Because we know what it feels like to need help, we should become people who offer help.

Jesus calls us to be a blessing.

Galatians 6:2

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ."

The world does not need more people who spread pain; it needs people who reflect the love of Christ.

5. God Is the Greatest Source of Gratitude

People may fail us, but God remains faithful.

Some people who helped us were blessings from God. Some people who hurt us became lessons that strengthened us. Through every experience, God continues to shape our character.

Romans 8:28

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him."

Conclusion

Be grateful for the people who loved you. Be grateful for those who stood with you. Be grateful for the lessons learned through difficult relationships. Do not let the wounds caused by some people blind you from the blessings brought by others.

A mature heart says:

"I remember the pain, but I choose gratitude. I remember those who hurt me, but I also remember those who helped me. Above all, I remember that God has been faithful through it all."
