Proverbs 4:23 — “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
There are many things in life that we know how to protect. We protect our homes, our money, our children, our cars, and even our phones with passwords. But sometimes we forget to protect the most important thing—our heart and our soul. The Bible says, “Above all else, guard your heart.” Why? Because whatever is happening in your heart will eventually show up in your life. What you carry inside will eventually come out through your words, your decisions, your relationships, and your behavior. You may be able to hide what is in your heart from people, but you cannot hide it from God.
Sometimes the danger to our soul does not come from something big. It can start with something very small. Someone hurts you, and you refuse to forgive. Someone succeeds, and jealousy begins to grow. You experience disappointment, and slowly you stop trusting God. You become successful, and little by little pride enters your heart. Before you know it, something that started small has changed the way you think and live. That is why we have to be watchful. Jesus said, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” We cannot afford to sleep spiritually while the enemy is looking for an opportunity to destroy what God is building in us.
We also need to be honest about what is coming out of us. Sometimes we ask, “Why am I so angry? Why am I always criticizing people? Why can't I forgive? Why am I losing my peace?” Sometimes the problem is not what is happening around us; the problem is what has been growing inside us. Jesus said that what comes out of our mouths comes from the heart. That is why David prayed, “Search me, God, and know my heart.” We need that prayer in our lives. “God, show me what I cannot see about myself. Show me what needs to change. Take away anything in me that is not pleasing to You.”
We can become so busy taking care of everybody else that we forget to take care of our own soul. We can be busy with ministry, work, family, business, and responsibilities and still be empty inside. We can look good on the outside while struggling on the inside. But God is not only interested in what people see; He is interested in who we are when nobody is watching. Jesus asked, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” There is nothing in this world worth exchanging for your relationship with God. Protect your peace. Protect your faith. Protect your character. Protect your relationship with God.
So today, I want to encourage you: watch over your soul. Pay attention to what you allow into your heart. Be careful about the voices you listen to and the people who influence you. When you are hurt, take it to God before it becomes bitterness. When you are tempted, pray before you fall. When you make a mistake, repent instead of hiding. And when you feel yourself drifting away from God, come back quickly. Your soul is too valuable to neglect. Guard your heart, because everything you do flows from it.
